about

It fell upon Odd Rumblings, the Brooklyn electronic duo, to resurrect the Sunken Cities with their “eerie signals bubbling up from beneath, disrupting the earth's crust with time-lapse grace,” as Dummy Mag once wrote of their sounds. Sunken Cities is their first LP, following on their debut EP Thieves (Public Information), which “takes the bubbling forest Techno of Fever Ray and replaces the modulated voices with beautiful harmonies,” according to 20JazzFunkGreats. “The tension between the holy voices and the sensual machines feels like watching an alien invasion from a church. All stain glass disco balls.”

Fast-forward to Sunken Cities, 2018. The invasion came and went, but it wasn’t aliens—it was ourselves, and all that’s left now are memories. Of witches and sorcerers, of revolutions that lived and died, of heat and ice, of pretty girls and boys and everything between. A broken transmission arrives. Voice fragments crackle across the waves. Is that English? Maybe Esperanto, or Chinese? Then, unequivocally, you hear it say:

Affirmation horoscopes and astral insights. November 16.

You have been feeling the weight of the stars. Your Sun in Clown, Moon in Burning Dumpster Fire, Rising Sign in Mad Max—you may be reacting with horror and a sense of paralysis to this vision of humanity sinking. Saturn in Mordor can bring anxiety and dread, and you, with your 10th House in Gentle Butterfly, are especially feeling it this month. Neptune, stationing direct after a long retrograde, is also entering Waterworld, unleashing its full maelstrom of pampered, petulant men who are fixated on their dwindling power. (The sign is ruled by the Idiot Gentleman hoarding everything for himself.) Just remember to breathe. Relax your shoulders, loosen your jaw and say it with me: Space is the Place—not this Sunken City. Repeat the affirmation, and repeat it again. Neptune in Waterworld calls on us to say Fuck this Civilization! and flee its ruins. Only then can a New New World arise.

Your Pluto in Rational Downer disposes you to scoff, but before you conjure the spirit of Wikihow’s “How to Argue that Astrology is Fake,” just breathe. Remember that the sounds you pipe across Bluetooth waves—the ones that possess your hips, and make you bob as you drive or melt into your bed sheets at the vastness of longing, the universe and pain—are also witchery. Let yourself be swaddled by these echoes: of spiritual rites once held on a starship, gently reverberating to infinity. Walk with me, and the Church of Odd Rumblings will be your portal to freedom.

This is a new day.
